I received a phone call from a musician friend of mine from Texas yesterday. Things are going well for him in the field of music right now. While I wish him well, I can’t help thinking he will only be trampled over (again) for all of his endeavors.
Most people just really do not care about more traditional forms of Blues music these days. While the folk and rock musicians of the sixties and seventies had the most noble of intentions to preserve and bring attention to trad. Blues, they also had an adverse affect. It was inevitable and unavoidable.
It’s a double edged sword, actually. If it hadn’t been for people like Keith Richard(s) and Eric Clapton (to name only a couple), the Blues, as a genre, may have withered completely out of the collective consciousness. It was diluted and added to, however, to make it more “accessible” to their audiences. While it served to spawn an interest in the music, it also redefined what Blues is. The result is that is has become well nigh impossible to get anywhere playing acoustic, folk blues these days (save for one’s living room or porch.) (Not that this is uncommon in other areas of music, as well, but I am willing to bet that Bluegrass would be more readily accepted at a Country music venue than Country Blues would be at a Blues or Rock club, or, even at a Folk Music event.)
I fell in love with this simple, unaffected musical form a long time ago. While I do, indeed, listen to and appreciate many different types of music, I would definitely say that I am a purist when it comes to blues, and I am really only interested in playing purist blues. I’ll listen to (and, likely, enjoy) modern blues & rock all day with you, but I’m not going to attempt to play it. It doesn’t interest me that way.
What I’d rather do, however, is hand you a guitar and a tall glass of iced tea as we sit down on the front porch together and go over some of these old Blues recordings I found...
WAyf - great to see you; trust that all is well. I agree that it is a hard life trying to get noticed in the world with one's talents today. Thanks for the music and blessings to you and your wife - June

That is great blues. Listened all the way through. Agree, that is the real blues. A lot of the present day stuff they label "blues" just don't cut the mustard. Hows about some of yours?
It could have been a graphic or a quote, It could have been something that you wrote! You added greatly to my Spring Fever Post So I linked to your blog as a toast, "For all you do and all you say ... Wishing you the BEST of today!"

I agree Wayf, nothing is more appreciated done simply. The lyrics are as simple as the music itself. I can't play or sing but I would be more than willing to sit on the porch, sip tea, and just listen. That would be a very nice day Wayf! Peaceful.
I have started a "prayer link" for Shadow and Crone that will hopefully go around as much of the Stream as possible. If you don't get "linked to" another site in a comment, you can come to my site and send out the prayer from there. It is my hope that as many of us as possible will join hands to send all the possible positive energy we can to them. Thanks. CM

speaking of blues singers, did you see this?
Jimmy Giuffre, 86, music pioneer of classically inspired jazz Matt Schudel Washington Post Apr. 30, 2008 12:00 AM
Jimmy Giuffre, a jazz musician who composed a popular big-band anthem of the 1940s and became an innovator of a minimalist form of classically inspired jazz, died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass.
He had Parkinson's disease and would have turned 87 last Saturday.
Giuffre had his greatest early fame as the composer of Four Brothers, a popular instrumental hit for Woody Herman's big band in 1947. Later, after a stint in the saxophone section of Herman's big band, Giuffre formed a series of trios that explored what he called "blues-based folk jazz."
His groups, invariably called the Jimmy Giuffre 3, often included guitarist Jim Hall and blended advanced musical techniques with a homespun, back-porch feeling. Giuffre, who played clarinet, tenor saxophone and baritone saxophone in the 1950s, gained modest popularity in the late 1950s and was featured in the documentary Jazz on a Summer's Day, filmed at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.
Later, as his ideas reached beyond the mainstream, Giuffre lost his audience and concentrated on teaching and composing. In the past 10 years, however, as his early recordings were re-released, he was recognized as a subtle and forward-thinking jazz pioneer.
After early experience in jazz bands, Giuffre took an interest in counterpoint, fugues and other elements of classical music.
He became identified with John Lewis, George Russell, Gunther Schuller and other musicians who sought to blend jazz and classical music in a style known as Third Stream.
James Peter Giuffre was born in Dallas on April 26, 1921.

wayfarer, Blues is the purist form of suffering. I never got into it because 'rock' hit me lika ton of fertilizer! And I just don't think I cared for the constant sadness. Maybe I was over-compansating for my own, I don't know. Jimi Hendrix was pretty bluesy when he tried. I loved Clapton's stuff too. Keith Richard-eh, overrated, I thought. Clapton made me cry one night. I was down a little and playing his CD "Chronicles". "River of tears" was the song. Man, I let loose! It was astounding. Joe

Thanks for sharing some fine down-home blues Wayf. Makes me realize how much I miss the back-porch blues we used to do here at the Pnderosa and other shacks before that. Seems like sometimes life winds itself around us way too tight and I'm way overdue to escape in the blues for awhile. Here's wishin' you a peaceful, easy Sunday afternoon.
